Fair Trade Policy by Barry Waters

Here at Ethnic Percussion we are proud to offer you both high quality and ethically sourced djembes, drums and didgeridoos from craftsmen around the globe.

We support fair trade principles and will only work with like-minded suppliers. This starts with the sourcing of products from South-East Asia and follows through to our retail distribution of the product here in the UK.

We ensure that the craftsmen responsible for producing these superior instruments are paid fairly for their work. We want them to be in a position where they can help build the community services that we take for granted.

Our suppliers achieve this by investing time in the local communities. Producers are found that represent the five main religions of the area and both male and female craftsmen are employed through the various stages of the production process to help maintain the social balance in these areas.

Producers are able to dictate their prices thereby ensuring that these prices are above local averages. This achieves high quality products and an attention to detail that surpasses products that are made under factory or other mass-production conditions.

We also believe that education is critical to any community and child labour is not tolerated. Our suppliers actively encourage the part-time training of older youths, insisting that these trainees remain in education and that they receive a full wage for the time that they spend working. This ensures that they have the option to follow a career upon leaving school and helps to sustain the community for successive generations.

All raw materials are sustainable and legal and no poached or endangered woods are used. Our hardwood djembes are all made from sustainable mahogany and we are proud to say with confidence that the timber can be traced through government certification all the way back to its managed, sustainable plantation. No toxic or harmful materials are used in the production process and any waste created is disposed of in an ecologically sound manner.

We take fair trade and sustainability seriously and a great deal of time and effort has been spent building relationships with our producers to ensure that high standards are upheld.
